From Texas to Rhode Island, Our Voices, Our Votes
On Monday, June 25, 2016, the Supreme Court once again upheld the Constitutional right to abortion. In its 5-3 ruling in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, the Court struck down dangerous restrictions on abortion providers in Texas. This is an amazing victory for the whole country – one that moves the fight for reproductive freedom forward.
Let us take a moment to celebrate this historic win – then get back to work because the fight is not done.
Here in Rhode Island, we face some serious challenges. Our opponents introduce dozens of bills to restrict abortion every year, and only one third of the General Assembly publicly supports the right to have one. Additionally, our state still has laws that have been ruled unconstitutional by the courts, including abortion spousal notification requirement, a ban in all commercial health insurance covering abortion, and bans on certain procedures. Rhode Island also bans payment for abortion services for low-income women covered by Medicaid – that’s over 210,000 Rhode Islanders.
Furthermore, NARAL Pro-Choice America gave Rhode Island an “F” rating in their 2016 “Who decides?” scorecard. This is the same grade received by Texas!
Although these facts could paint a scary scenario for our state, there’s also good news: YOU can take action and build the movement for reproductive freedom by joining supporting Planned Parenthood Votes! Rhode Island. Tell your friends and family about our work, follow us on social media to get the latest news on reproductive rights and health, and support our work by joining our multiple events throughout the year.
Our next event will be Rock the Boat on Thursday, July 28, in Pawtucket. Besides having lots of fun and hanging out with new people, you will be able to meet local candidates and enjoy food and drinks while supporting reproductive rights in Rhode Island.
Other events will be announced throughout the year – stay tuned. With your help, we'll keep fighting back and protect the seats of our allies in the General Assembly who support reproductive rights for all. Together, we can secure reproductive freedom for all Rhode Islanders!
